Introduction

** Submissions are now open. Read these guidelines carefully. Submissions that significantly violate these guidelines (‘significantly’ being defined as more than 1 violation) may be deleted without being read. **

Please note that these guidelines have been revised 2015/12/08.

General Guidelines (Applicable to all submissions)

  • Submissions are geographically limited to Canada, Alaska, and the northern U.S. border states (MN, WI, PA, OH, MI, WA, ND, MT, ID, NY, VT, ME, and NH)
  • We accept poetry and short prose. See genre specific guidelines below.
  • Simultaneous submissions are accepted if you immediately notify us if a work has been accepted elsewhere. If you do not notify us of acceptance elsewhere, we will assume your work is still available.
  • Previously published works are NOT accepted, but if your work has only appeared on your personal blog/website we will accept it.
  • The subject must (!) be formatted like this: “Jane Doe – 3 Poems” or “John Doe – Prose” … Please follow this format as closely as you can
  • Include a 3 or 4 line bio in the third person. Start it with your full name. Be sure to indicate which city and state/province you live in. Including a personal URL is usually fine. Keep it under 100 words, though we aren’t going to be a nit-picker about exact length.
  • All rights to your work revert to you upon publication (except we will archive on our website indefinitely).
  • We will try to give an official response as soon as possible, hopefully within two or three months (but please don’t bombard us with query e-mails if it take a bit longer than that). If you have submitted your work and it has taken longer than that, please accept our apologies, trust that we will get back to you, and PLEASE don’t query more than once or twice!
  • Please do NOT resubmit until you have a heard back from us.
  • Submit your work via e-mail to northerncardinalreview@gmail.com

Poetry Guidelines

  • No attachments! (unless they are merely a backup to confirm line formatting) Include up to 5 poems in the body of an e-mail, somewhere around 2 or 3 is an ideal submission. Each poem must be less than 75 lines.
  • You don’t need to conform to a theme, though we trend towards loving poems that talk about natural grandeur, wildlife, outdoor living, scenes, and fond memories. We aren’t very excited about poetry that is highly negative or overly introspective.
  • We are pretty open on form/style. We have our biases, but we would rather not let them taint what we receive. You can’t go wrong with vivid writing that has a musical voice. Rhyming/meter is great, if it is done well. So is free verse.

Prose Guidelines

  • Include 1 non-fiction piece, book review, or short story of less than 2,000 words in the body of an e-mail. 1,000 is the limit if it is a book review. No attachments!
  • You don’t need to conform to a theme, though we tend to love essays that talk about natural grandeur, wildlife, outdoor living, scenes, and fond memories.
